The continuous changes that happen throughout the course of a month, with large shifts during adolescence or leading up to menopause, can make a system especially susceptible to imbalances which can cause unwanted symptoms. Whether it is unwanted premenstrual symptoms such as irritability, bloating, breast tenderness, headaches, low back pain, or painful and irregular periods, acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine are wonderful for smoothing out the bumps in the road, letting you have continuous comfort all month long.
Many people are surprised to hear that in the field of Chinese Medicine, we don’t consider a painful and crampy period normal, or acceptable! Similarly, in our medicine, peri-menopause and menopause are not considered pathological, but a normal, healthy, and expected progression, reflecting our growing maturity and wisdom. That said, the way we as acupuncturists expect this transition to unfold is through a gradual and comfortable lightening and further spacing of the menstrual cycles.
If you are having more frequent or heavier periods, continuous spotting, and/or if you are uncomfortable during this time of life, there is much we can do. Hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, vaginal dryness, irritability and moodiness can all be alleviated, and the periods can often be turned around so that they are progressing towards being lighter and further apart.
I would be happy to discuss your unique situation with you, and see if you are someone I think I can help.
A patient came to the clinic concerned about her frequent, heavy, and extremely painful periods. She experienced diarrhea with her periods, and was typically so fatigued and drained by the pain that she would have to stay in bed for the first two days of every cycle.
We did a combination of acupuncture and customized Chinese herbal formulas, and over the course of three months, her periods became lighter, occurring once every month, she no longer had any lower back pain nor any cramping at all, she no longer had diarrhea with her cycle, and her energy remained steady throughout the month – no more missing work or fun events due to her period!
